BRUNO CAPTURES SECOND NJ STATE MASTERS TITLE
Charles Bruno of Deptford captured his second
title at the 28th New Jersey State Bowling Association Masters Tournament at
Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick. He previously won the title in
2007.
Bruno after qualifying fourth with an eight-game score of 1845 (Joe Pompilio
of Toms River, the 2006 Masters Champion, was the leading qualifier with an
1891) then compiled a 10-1 match play record with a 227 tourney average. In
the two-game match play finals he defeated John ‘JD’ Santalucia of North
Brunswick (the 1999 Masters Champion) 465-449. Bruno then lost to Joe Pompilio
446-413 to force him into the Loser’s Bracket. He then defeated Ray Smarsh
of Matawan 465-403, Last Year’s Champion Jason Stadtler of Cherry Hill 522
(with a 290 game) – 453, Vinnie D’Ambrosio of Staten Island, NY 439-415,
Joe Quinn of Woodbridge 462-437, the 1989 Masters Champion John Gualtieri of
Edison 455-384, Mike Mullin of Congers, NY 454-378 and 1998 Masters Champion
Kevin Cartier of Edgewater Park 429-326 to gain entry to the championship
match to face Dave Mutch of Oakland.
Mutch earned his way to the championship match going through the winners
bracket defeating Jeff Butler of Garfield 453-382, Ken Carson of Clifton
454-396, Mike Reasoner of Hazlet 503-371, Mullin 446-407 and Cartier 375-352.
In the championship match, Bruno defeated Mutch 419-407 to force a Roll-off
match for the championship. Bruno claimed the title over Mutch 467-385.
Honor scores bowled in the tournament were: 300 games rolled by Bruno and
Quinn. 11-in-a-row games were rolled by Alex Krul Jr. of Merchantsville (299),
Joe Bonser of Prospect Park (298), 2006 Masters Champion Steve Aiello of North
Haledon (290) and Bruno (290).
185 participated in the tournament.
